The Valley consists of four counties: Starr, Hidalgo, Willacy and Cameron.

The Valley is growing at a fast pace especially in major cities such as Brownsville, Harlingen, McAllen, Edinburg and Mission. There are thirteen newspapers, some in English and some in Spanish because of the of Mexican-American, who form the majority of the population.

Because of the Valley's warm climate, many Canadians and Americans from the North spend their winter months here. South Padre Island, which lies at the mouth of the Rio Grande River in the Gulf of Mexico, attracts locals as well as tourists to its beautiful beaches.

People in the Valley enjoy shopping, going to the cinema & international cuisine. Shopping may include anything from typical Mexican items and gifts to international brands such as Moschino and Prada. Cinemas feature films in both English and Spanish. Cuisine may include anything from a homemade and traditional Mexican dish to a typical French meal.

Michael E. Fossum, an astronaut, Tom Landry, and NFL head coach and Freddy Fender are some famous people who have been born, lived or died in the Rio Grande Valley.
