South Texas College was the only community college in this the Rio Grande
Valley area (founded in 1993) but it was recently created a college and now
offers the Bachelor of Applied Technology, as well as the associate degrees it
offered as a community college.
A community college is like a
public college except that it only offers associate degrees( two year degrees)
and it has no residential life since students do not live on the campus. In the
thirteen years of its existence, its student body (1,000 to 17,000) and faculty
(267 to 1487) have grown, as well as the campuses (1 to 5) that constitute STC.
It has campuses in McAllen, Weslaco and Rio Grande City as well as two other centers
in McAllen.
